Hyphen Founder appointed Swiss Armed Forces Battalion Commander
Hyphen is proud to announce that our Founder and Managing Director, Michael Savolainen, has assumed command of a battalion as part of his ongoing involvement with the Swiss Armed Forces.
Michael took charge of the 17th mechanised battalion on January 1, succeeding Lt Col (GS) Xavier de Haller, and comes just months after he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel (General Staff).
This appointment complements Michael’s work at Hyphen, particularly across defence and security-related engagements. The role reinforces the practical leadership, operational insight, and strategic judgement he brings to complex client assignments.
The battalion consists of a battalion staff and six companies, including headquarters, logistics, tank, and mechanised infantry elements, while the unit has a target strength of more than 850 personnel. It represents a significant combined-arms capability within Switzerland’s land forces.
As Battalion Commander, Michael is responsible for the operational readiness of the unit. This includes planning and leading the annual four-week refresher training period, supported by a dedicated battalion staff.

Michael brings broad operational and staff experience to the command, previously serving as Deputy G3 in the staff of the first mechanised brigade and as Chief of Staff of Switzerland’s first Cyber Battalion. Earlier in his career, Michael served as a Company Commander. He is a reconnaissance officer by training, with a strong grounding in manoeuvre, intelligence, and command leadership.
The battalion operates some of the Swiss Army’s most important platforms. These include 28 Leopard 2 main battle tanks and 33 CV90/30 infantry fighting vehicles.
Switzerland’s armed forces operate on an active reserve model underpinned by conscription. Most personnel complete initial training and remain integrated within assigned units for recurring service.
The battalion’s activities can be followed via its official Instagram and YouTube channels.
